Ruksana Patel: Transformative Teaching and Learning scholar

Social justice and further education

Ruksana works at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London where she teaches BTEC Business Level 1 – Level 3.

In her video Ruksana looks at social justice and further education.  She gives us an overview of concepts drawn from different theorists (Bourdieu, Spivak, Mezirow, Bernstein and Freire) and their ideas about social justice. She casts a critical eye on the idea of ‘human capital’: the idea that education is about providing ‘skills’ to benefit a nation’s economy and that does not recognise the need to address social inequality either at home or across the world. She also looks at how the current system of assessment supports and reproduces social inequalities.
